JU Ming (1938-2023), who passed away in 2023 at age 85, is a sculptor of unparalleled prominence in the Chinese-speaking world. He studied under the master sculptor Lee Chin-chuan (李金川) during his youth, as well as the famous sculptor Yang Ying-feng (楊英風). He started to establish his fame in the 1980s and gradually became an internationally renowned sculptor. Ju has been adhering to the spirit of art as a spiritual practice throughout his life. His works incorporate his experiences growing up in the Taiwanese countryside and his concern for humanity, portraying countless pieces that deeply touch people’s hearts through the refined simplicity of contemporary art. His most significant series of works include ” Nativist (鄉土)”, “Tai Chi (太極)”, and “The Living World (人間)”. Those works have been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the National Museum of Singapore (1986), South Bank Art Center in London (1991), Yorkshire Sculpture Park (1991), and Place Vendôme in Paris, France (1997), among others. His works are also collected by international institutions, including the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge in the UK, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in Israel.
Ju has gained international acclaim and received numerous awards, including Japan’s “Enku Award”, “Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize”, “Asian Art Innovator Award”, “Taiwan Contribution Award”,and “Arts and Culture Award – The Presidential Cultural Awards, R.O.C (Taiwan)”. In 2021, he was selected as one of the “most influential cultural figures in Asia” by Tatler magazine. While Ju devoted himself to his artistic creations, he never forgot to contribute to society. His largest piece of work— the Ju Ming Museum, since its inauguration in 1991, has not only showcased the artist’s lifelong dedication, but has also been actively promoting sculpture research, exhibitions, and art education for children, preserving the spirit of the artist in various forms.
