Marius Bercea was born in 1979 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He graduated from the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca in 2003 and received his MA in 2005. Bercea is a founding member of Laika, an artists’ collective that coordinates studio and exhibition space within Cluj’s Fabrica de Pensule (Paintbrush Factory), and in Bucharest. At the age of 10, Bercea experienced the Romanian Revolution of 1989 and later the collapse of the USSR. Inspiring by family photographs, newspaper clippings, and tales from his family’s history, his paintings are an amalgamation of memory, recollection and reality, communicating to the viewer a personalized vision of post-communist, early-capitalist Romania. The artist’s important solo exhibitions include A Full Rotation of the Moon at the Cluj Museum of Art in 2017, and Yellow Side of Glamour/Melted Guidelines are passé at the Contemporary Gallery of Brukenthal Museum in 2008. Marius Bercea’s works are collected by institutions, such as the Taubman Museum of Art, ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art.
