News | Announcing Representation of Yuyu YANG Estate
Asia Art Center is pleased to announce its representation of the Yuyu YANG estate, starting from June 7, 2024. A Yuyu Yang solo exhibition will be held at Asia Art Center (Taipei) from July 13th, 2024
Yuyu Yang, born in 1926 in Yilan County, Taiwan, and passed away in 1997 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, was one of the most influential artists and sculptors in Taiwan’s modern art. He studied at Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), the Art Department of Peking Fu Jen Catholic University, and the Art Department of National Taiwan Normal University. In the 1960s, he furthered his art studies at the Sculpture Department of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and the Rome Mint School in Italy. Besides teaching at numerous institutions and nurturing many talents, he published over thirty volumes of complete art collections and held dozens of exhibitions domestically and internationally, including the installation of the “Advent of the Phoenix” landscape sculpture at the 1970 World Expo in Osaka, Japan. Throughout his life, Yuyu Yang created over 2,500 works, including comics, prints, sculptures, laser art, landscape sculptures, and architectural planning, receiving numerous honors. He was also the first practitioner of public art in Taiwan.
In the postwar history of Taiwanese art, Yuyu Yang continued the realistic achievements of the pioneering sculptor Huang Tu-shui (1895-1930). He was a key figure in transitioning from classical realism to natural realism in modern sculpture. Furthermore, he was a forerunner in integrating the Eastern cultural concept of “void space” into the forms of Western modern sculpture.
Yuyu Yang’s art was inspired by nature, respecting, beautifying, and protecting it, and integrating art into everyday life. He exemplified the contemporary ideal of “art in life and life in art.” His works stood in public spaces like squares and streets, symbolizing his name “Yuyu,” derived from the Chinese classic “The Book of Odes” (11th to 7th centuries BC), meaning a deer calling out to its companions upon finding a spring, sharing the joy of the clear stream. This reflects his spirit of dedication and praise, aiming to create timeless cultural images that transcend time and space.
